When we first moved into the cottage, the kitchen cabinets were a dated oak finish that felt heavy and dark. We knew we wanted something lighter, warmer, and more in keeping with our rustic cottage aesthetic.
Why Chalk Paint?
Chalk paint was the obvious choice for us. It requires minimal prep (no priming needed for most surfaces), dries quickly, and gives that beautiful matte, slightly textured finish that's perfect for a country cottage look.
The Process
First, we removed all the cabinet doors and hardware. A good clean with sugar soap removed years of grease and grime. We lightly sanded just to give the paint something to grip onto.
We chose a beautiful sage green shade that would complement our cream walls and wooden countertops. The first coat went on in the morning, and by afternoon we were ready for the second.
The Finishing Touch
After the paint fully cured, we applied a clear wax for protection. New brass cup handles were the final touch – they add just the right amount of warmth and vintage character.
Total cost? Under £150. Time invested? One weekend. The transformation? Absolutely priceless.
